Indians designated hitter/first baseman Jason Giambi will be placed on the major league disabled list on Sunday, ensuring he will receive a $100,000 retention bonus.
Giambi said Tuesday morning he expected the move.
Giambi suffered a non-displaced rib fracture on his right side when he was hit by a pitch from the Chicago Cubs Edwin Jackson on March 7. When his injury was announced, he was expected to miss three to four weeks.
Giambi, 43, is in camp on a minor league free agent contract. To be placed on the disabled list, he would first have to be added to the 40-man roster, which will also happen Sunday. The stint will be retroactive to March 21, which means the earliest he will be available to play is April 5 against the Minnesota Twins in Cleveland.
He will travel with the Indians to Oakland, where they open the season on Monday.
The deadline for the Indians to make the decision involving the bonus was today.
"'G' is with us," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "We'll have something to announce I'm sure."
As for his rib injury, Giambi said he feels "great.''
"I swung yesterday, (hitting) off a tee and hit everything, so I guess I can start progressing," he said. "I feel really good."
Pitcher Josh Tomlin makes his final bid for the starting rotation today against the Rangers. He's battling Carlos Carrasco, who turned inan impressive six innings Monday. Francona said it isn't likely that he would let the two know the front office's decision today.
