Pregame blog: Indians vs. Reds lineup, notes and cuts

By Marla Ridenour Published: March 17, 2014

The Indians' Carlos Santana will make his first spring training appearance at catcher Wednesday in a 4:05 p.m. game against the Oakland A's in Goodyear.

Trying to convert from catcher to third base, Santana spent the first five days of spring training behind the plate, then was told he would be used exclusively at third base. Santana will also catch on the side today in the bullpen at the team's Goodyear complex.

The Indians have an off-day Thursday. Yan Gomes will catch Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. game against the San Francisco Giants in Goodyear, then Friday and Saturday against the Colorado Rockies, with Friday's game at Talking Stick and Saturday's at home.

"I'm not sure we quite know exactly how it's going to go," Francona said of the catching situation and Santana's attempted position switch.

Infielder Justin Sellers suffered a slight hip flexor strain Sunday against the Giants in Scottsdale and will miss a few days.

The Indians trimmed the roster to 46 with six cuts.

Left-handers Scott Barnes and Nick Hagadone were optioned to Triple-A Columbus. Right-handers Travis Banwart, Tyler Cloyd and J.C. Ramirez and left-hander Mike Zagurski were reassigned to minor league camp. Ramirez will undergo surgery today at the Cleveland Clinic after fracturing his left thumb and spraining a ligament in a 'B' game against the Chicago White Sox on March 11 in Goodyear.

Infielder Ryan Rohlinger has been told he's been reassigned to the minors, but he will stay with the major leaguers for now, Francona said.

Outfielder Matt Carson (bruised left hand) may play today and outfielder Nyjer Morgan (lef calf strain) may be cleared to go Tuesday.
