A rainy morning in Cleveland couldn’t dampen the spirits of the Indians front office, coaches and players as the team held a morning press conference to announce the contract extension for second baseman Jason Kipnis.

Like left fielder Michael Brantley and catcher Yan Gomes before him, Kipnis signed a multiyear contract – a six-year, 52.5 million deal – that includes a club option for 2020. Kipnis’ contract covers this season, three of his arbitration eligible seasons and two free agent seasons through ‘19.

Last season Kipnis, 27, hit .284 with a .818 OPS that included 17 home runs and a team-leading 84 RBI. In just his second full season with the Tribe, the converted outfielder stole 30 bases and was named one of the club’s two All-Star representatives.
