In a surprise move this afternoon, the Indians designated Mark Reynolds for assignment and recalled right-handed reliever Preston Guilmet from Columbus.
The addition of Guilment is understandable. After Wednesday night's 14-inning marathon, a 6-5 loss to the Tigers, manager Terry Francona can use an extra reliever.
Guilmet spent four days with the Tribe in July, making is major-league debut pitching two thirds of an inning aginst the Blue Jays. At Triple-A, he is 4-4 with 18 saves and a 1.95 ERA in 42 appearances.
Reynolds began the season as an everyday fixture in the lineup, mostly at designated hitter. But after a torrid April, he has been in a horrific slump. Overall, he is batting .215 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI in 99 games.
