The hordes are coming from Tribe farm system

DETROIT: No fewer than10 players will be summoned from the minors beginning Sunday, when rosters can be expanded to 40.

Manager Terry Francona revealed today that relievers Preston Guilmet, Nick Hagadone, Blake Wood plus catcher Kelly Shoppach and infielder Jose Ramirez will arrive Sunday.

Carrasco optioned but not for long; Cooper leaves

 DETROIT:  The Indians needed a roster spot today to make room for Jason Kubel, so they optioned Carlos Carrasco to Columbus, but it's unlikely that he will stay there for long.

 He is eligible to return to the big leagues on Tuesday, and undoubtedly  he will be brought back that day.

Tribe signs OF Jason Kubel and C Kelly Shoppach in late effort to beef up punchless lineup

The Indians signed two veterans Friday morning/early afternoon in attempt to add some life to their punchless lineup in a final wild card push, bringing outfielder Jason Kubel and catcher Kelly Shoppach into the fold.

At 9:30 am this morning, the team confirmed yesterday's wide spread rumors that a deal for the Arizona Diamondbacks Kubel had been made. The Tribe received Kubel and cash from the Diamondbacks in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.

Indians release Brett Myers

The Indians gave up on their $7 million experiment with 32-year-old right-hander Brett Myers Thursday, reinstating him to the 60-man roster and releasing him.

Myers went 0-3 with an 8.02 ERA in 21 1/3 innings. He gave up 29 hits and 10 home runs during his short time on the mound, striking out 12 and walking five.

Indians place OF Ryan Raburn on disabled list

On Tuesday, even as he tried to be optimistic, Ryan Raburn did not rule out a trip to the disabled list with inflammation in his left heel.

That proved to be prophetic Wednesday as the Indians placed the outfielder on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of outfielder Matt Carson from Class AAA-Columbus. Because his move was retroactive, Raburn is eligible to be activated on Tuesday.

Daiskuke Matsuzaka asks to leave; wish granted by Indians

ANAHEIM, Calif.: Daisuke Matsuzaka asked to leave the Indians' organization and was granted his release today.

Matsuzaka signed a minor league contract with the Tribe last winter and has spent the season at Columbus, where he compiled a 5-8 record and 3.92 ERA in 19 starts. In 103 1/3 innings, he walked 39 and struck out 95.

Santana moves Cabrera out of cleanup spot; Carrasco in bullpen for now

 OAKLAND, Calif.: At least for awhile, Carlos Santana will supplant Asdrubal Cabrera as the Tribe's cleanup hitter.


   Also for now, Carlos Carrasco is being shifted to the bullpen, at least for tonight. Longer term plans for him will await developments.

Tribe signs Cuban pitcher; Naquin pormoted to Akron

MINNEAPOLIS: The Indians have signed 19-year-old Cuban pitcher Leandro Linares for a reported $950,000 and sent him to their training complex in Goodyear, Ariz.


Baseball America first reported the Linares signing July 23, but that was only a verbal agreement. Several details were worked out since then.

Tribe signs former No. 1 pick, might be September call-up

  MINNEAPOLIS: The Indians signed 26-year-old free agent first baseman David Cooper to a minor-league contract and sent him to their facility in Goodyear, Ariz..

 Cooper was the Blue Jays' first-round pick in the 2008 draft  who made it to the big leagues in 2011, batting .211 in 71 at-bats.

Carrasco back as long reliever

   Carlos Carrasco returned to the big leagues today but not as a starter.

  The Indians recalled Carrasco to work out of the bullpen as a long reliever. In three earlier stints with the Tribe this season, Carrasco is 0-4 with a 9.10 ERA in six starts.

Reynolds designated for assignment, Guilmet recalled

In a surprise move this afternoon, the Indians designated Mark Reynolds for assignment and recalled right-handed reliever Preston Guilmet from Columbus.

The addition of Guilment is understandable. After Wednesday night's 14-inning marathon, a 6-5 loss to the Tigers, manager Terry Francona can use an extra reliever.

Tribe loses to Tigers in 14th; Salazar shines

CLEVELAND: For two hours Wednesday night, Danny Salazar made 20,169 fans at Progressive Field forget about the Indians’ travails with the Tigers and their uphill battle to win the Central Division.

In two major-league starts, Salazar has become the Sam McDowell of the 21st century, a kid who throws lightning bolts and makes All-Stars look like they got called up from rookie league.

At least Langwell didn't go hungry

 CLEVELAND: Matt Langwell spent less than 24 hours in Cleveland before driving back to Columbus.

 Langwell was summoned two hourw before game time tusday night when the Tribe put Corey Kluber on the disabled list with a finger injury.

Indians expect starter Corey Kluber to miss 4-6 weeks

The Indians released more information about starter Corey Kluber's sprained right middle finger this afternoon.

Maybe most importantly, Kluber is expected to miss the next four to six weeks, which means he might miss all but the final 10 games season, which would be two or three starts.

Indians sign two-year contract extension with Ryan Raburn

The Indians signed outfielder Ryan Raburn to a two-year contract this afternoon.

ESPN's Jim Bowden calls the deal fair on Twitter after reporting that it is for $4.85 million over two years and includes a team option for 2016.

Kluber goes on DL with sprained finger

   CLEVELAND: As the announcement was made at 6:40 p.m. that Corey Kluber is headed to the disabled list, right-hander Matt Langwell was driving north on I-71 from Coumbus to join the Tribe.

Kluber will be sidelined for at least 15 days With a sprained right middle finger. No further details were given, but apparently the injury is similar to the one that landed Zach McAllister on the DL for seven weeks.

Right-hander Fernando Nieve was traded to the Athletics for cash considerations, and right-hander Joe Martinez was outrighted to Columbus.
