NEW YORK: After getting an exhaustive number of medical opinions, the Indians determined that Grady Sizemore will undergo surgery in Vail, Colo. some time this week.
""After consultations with several physicans both nationally and internationally, the consortium feels that the best course of action is a knee arthroscopy,'' Tribe head trainer Lonnie Soloff said today. ""It will be this week, but the day has not been scheduled.''
Dr. Richard Steadman will perform the procedure. Steadman pioneered microfracture surgery, but Soloff said the precise nature of the operation won't become known uintil Steadman views the area around Sizemore's left knee through a scope. Originally the injury was described as a deep knee bruise after the center fielder slid back into first in a game against the Orioles in Baltimore on May 16.
""Grady will miss at least six to eight weeks and potentially more,'' Soloff said.
If microfracture surgery becomes Steadman's choice, Sizemore could miss a year.
