In preparation for the upcoming Rule 5 Draft, The Indians purchased the contracts of seven players and added them to their 40-man roster.
First baseman/outfielder Jordan Brown, shortstop Jason Donald and third baseman Wes Hodges were selected from the Triple-A Columbus roster, right-handed pitcher Jeanmar Gomez, shortstop Carlos Rivero and outfielder Nick Weglarz were selected from the Double-A Akron roster and left-handed pitcher Kelvin De La Cruz was plucked from the short-season Mahoning Valley roster to bring the Indians Major League roster to 40 men.
The 25-year-old Brown was a mid-season and post-season all-star selection who led the International League with a .336 batting average. including 15 home runs and 67 RBI in 111 games.
Although the 21-year-old De La Cruz began the season at high Class-A Kinston, after just two starts he was sidelined with a strained left elbow and missed the rest of the regular season. He did, however, return to make three starts for the Arizona Rookie League team in Goodyear, AZ and also pitched in the Fall Instructional League.
The 25-year-old Donald was acquired in the July 29th, six-player trade with Philadelphia that sent Cliff Lee to the Phillies, splitting the season between Triple-A Lehigh Valley (.236) and Columbus (.257).
The 21-year-old Gomez started the season at Kinston, but was soon called up to Akron, where he tossed a perfect game against Trenton in May and went on to capture the Eastern Legue's Pitcher of the Year Award.
