Talbot will miss one start; Masterson will fill in

By Sheldon Published: September 15, 2010

CLEVELAND: Doctors found nothing seriously wrong with Mitch Talbot's right shoulder, but he will miss his next scheduled start on Saturday in Kansas City.

Justin Masterson will start against the Royals instead, and it might be his last appearance of the season.

""The MRI on Talbot came out fine,'' manager Manny Acta said this afternoon. ""What we're going to do is skip him just in case. He will throw on the side Saturday (instead of making the start). Masterson will make that start, then Talbot will start on the 23rd if everything goes well.''

Talbot was forced to come out of his last start after throwing to three batters in a game against the Twins on Sunday, when Masterson was summoned from the bullpen to threw seven innings.

Masterson had been assigned to the bullpen over the weekend, so he would not exceed his mandated pitch limit of 180 innings for the season. Including his outing on Sunday, his inning count has climbed to 173, which means a seven-inning start on against Kansas City would max him out for the year.

""That's going to be it,'' Acta said.
However, it would be no surprise that if Acta needed Masterson to throw one or two innings to help win a game or two, he might exceed the arbitrary innings limit.
