The setup for the setup man

By Sheldon Published: April 6, 2011

CLEVELAND: Without making a pronouncement or an announcement, it appears that manager Manny Acta has chosen his setup man.

All spring, Acta insisted that he had not selected one pitcher to hold leads in the eighth inning, but most likely the job would be split between Rafael Perez and Tony Sipp. But once the season opened, Sipp became the manager's man. On Sunday and Tuesday, Sipp was summoned to preserve the lead in the eighth inning.

""Tony showed up in camp in a lot better playing condition,'' Acta said late this afternoon. ""He had a goal in mind -- pitching down in the strike zone, and you can tell the difference. *elip If he runs away with the job, fine.''

With both Perez and Sipp throwing with their left arm, it doesn't necessarily make sense to use them as co-setup men, and Acta indicated that Perez will be used mostly as a left-on left matchup pitcher for now.
