BOSTON: Suddenly, Josh Tomlin has become a strikeout pitcher, something he had tried to avoid, because his idea of effective pitching is using as few pitches as possible to retire each batter.
“”I think Josh has been able to mix up his pitches more than he did last year,’’ said manager Manny Acta in explaining the upsurge in strikeouts. “”I think that’s because they made an adjustment to him last year.
“”Last year, he was probably throwing his cutter almost 50 percent of the time. This year, he is throwing his curveball more than he did, and it can be a swing and miss pitch.’’
Going into tonight's game agsqinwt the Red Sox, Jason Kipnis has played five career games at Fenway Park and is batting .381 (8-for-21) with one double, four home runs and four RBI.
“”I don’t know if it’s because I see the ball well or what,’’ he said. “”But I enjoy playing here.’’
