Tribe declines Sizemore's option, exercises Carmona's

By Sheldon Published: October 31, 2011

The Indians are looking for a new center fielder after declining Grady Sizemore's $9 million option for 2012. However, the Tribe decided to exercise Fausto Carmona's $7 mllion option for next season, keeping him in the rotation.

It isn't clear yet whether the club will attempt to sign Sizemoer for a lessser amount. If so, it will be difficult now that he can declare to be a free agent.

Injuries the past three years have undermined Sizemore's once bright career. Last season, he missesd major chunks of time with a bone bruise in his right knee and a sports hernia that required surgery. The previous year, he underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee.

Carmona had a fitful season, compiling a 7-15 record and 5.25 earned-run averge in 32 starts, pitching 188 2/3 innings. However, after trading their two brightest pitching prospects -- Drew Pomeranz and Alex White -- for Ubaldo Jimenez and losing Carlos Carrasco to injury for all of 2012, the Indians needed to keep Carmona and hope that he rebounds.
