Tribe executes two minor-league deals

By Sheldon Ocker Published: August 3, 2013

MIAMI: The Indians executed two transactions this afternoon concerning minor leaguers.

Right-hander Fernando Nieve was traded to the Athletics for cash considerations, and right-hander Joe Martinez was outrighted to Columbus.

Nieve appeared in 22 games for Columbus (20 out of the bullpen) and compiled a 5-3 record and 1.81 ERA. He walked 12 and struck out 55 in 44 2/3 innings.

Martinez, who was designated for assignment last week,  is 2-6 in 19 appearances for the Clippers (16 starts) with a 5.88 ERA.

It's not clear why the Tribe would jettison Nieve, unless the club needs his roster spot for the promotion of a pitcher from Akron or is working on a deal to bring in a pitcher that would be assigned to Triple-A.
