The Indians opened a baseball academy that will house the organization’s Dominican Summer League team and the club’s Latin American operations in a state-of-the-art facility in San Antonio de Guerra, Dominican Republic, - 18 miles east of the capital city of Santo Domingo.
The Indians have been tenants of the baseball academy since October and have held a fall Instructional League there. Howeve, Monday marked the Grand Opening of the facility with the 2011 Dominican Summer League season set to begin May 28th.
The facility includes two playing fields, an agility field, two hitting tunnels and a four-pack of bullpen training mounds. It is able to accommodate up to 60 players and four coaches, with daily meals provided. The facility also boasts a gym and training facility, an indoor recreation area for players and a classroom where the Indians' English language program will be taught.
The 2011 Indians Dominican Summer League team will be led by Manager MAX DIAZ, with his staff consisting of GUADELUPE JABALERA (hitting coach), MARIO BRITO (pitching coach), CARLOS FERMIN (infield coach) and WILFREDO TEJADA (special instructor).
