Tribe promotes Shapiro and Antonetti in front office

By sstorm Published: February 18, 2010

The Indians met with the local press early Thursday afternoon, announcing a front office move (although not effective until the end of the upcoming 2010 season) in which current general manager Mark Shapiro will assume the role of club President and current assistant general manager Chris Antonetti will be promoted to general manager.

In making the announcement, current team president Paul Dolan added that he will then assume the role of chairman/CEO at season’s end.

“A trademark of all successful organizations is stability,” Dolan said in a team press release. “We are fortunate to have three respected and trusted leaders in Mark Shapiro, Chris Antonetti and Dennis Lehman, who collectively share a passion for the Cleveland Indians.”

Entering his ninth season as GM and 19th overall, Shapiro is currently the sixth-most tenured GM in the game. Under his direction, the Indians captured the American League Central Division and came within a game of the World Series in 2007 and constructed the 2005 club that won 93 games.

Following each of those seasons, Shapiro was named the 2005 and 2007 Executive of the Year by the Sporting News. Additionally, in December 2009, he was named by MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to the Special Committee for On-Field Matters.

Now as club President, Shapiro will oversee both the Baseball and Business operations of the organization.

Antonetti is entering his ninth season as assistant GM and is in his 12th season overall with the Tribe after joining the Baseball Operations Department in 1999.

In his current role, Antonetti is involved in all aspects of baseball operations and primarily serves to assist Shapiro in all player acquisitions, contract negotiations and player evaluations.

He also oversees Player Development and Professional Scouting as well as the information systems, statistical analysis and video scouting within the Baseball Operations Department.
