Hodhes writes name in Aeros record book

By sstorm Published: August 30, 2008

Having already clinched the wild card in the Eastern League Southern Division, the Aeros as a team may have little to play for this weekend in Erie as the regular season comes to a close after Monday's contest.

But one big milestone was still within reach for third baseman Wes Hodges.

With four RBI in the Aeros 7-5 win over the SeaWolves Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park, Hodges became Akron's all-time single season RBI leader.

An Akron win. A Harrisburg loss.

Either scenario was all the Aeros needed to clinch a spot for the fourth consecutive season in the Eastern League playoffs that begin next week.

Miller rehabbing in Akron

By sstorm Published: August 28, 2008

A familiar face has been spotted in the Aeros clubhouse since the team returned to Canal Park for their final regular-season homestand.

The appearance of a certain former Aeros player gave manager Mike Sarbaugh the perfect occasion to lighten the mood Tuesday with his team coming off a dissapointing 2-6 trip despite trying to nail down a wild card spot in the Eastern League Southern Division.

Aeros notes entering final regular-season home stand

By sstorm Published: August 26, 2008

Aeros catcher Wyatt Toregas was activated from the disabled list Tuesday after being sidelined since Aug. 14 with a right elbow strain. Although Toregas said his elbow "felt great'', Aeros manager Mike Sarbaugh eased him back into action by having him serve as the team's deignated hitter, with back up Damaso Espino catching.
Toregas got off to a scorching start with the Aeros after being demoted to Akron from Triple-A Buffalo June 19th, batting .325 with 11 home runs and 32 RBIs in his first 34 games before his elbow began bothering him.

ARIZONA BOUND - Five of the six players the parent-club Indians have tabbed to play in the prestigious Arizona Fall League for the Surprise Rafters in October currently suit up for the Aeros.
Akron second baseman/shortstop Josh Rodriguez, third baseman Wes Hodges, left-handed pitchers Tony Sipp and Chuck Lofgren and right-handed pitcher Erik Stiller will join high Class-A Kinston first baseman Beau Mills and another played to be named when the AFL kicks off on Oct. 7. Lake County picthing coach Ruben Niebla will be a team coach as well.

A LITTLE MAGIC - The Aeros entered Tuesday's three-game home stand against Altoona with a magic number of three with seven games remaining in the regular season. Any combination of three Aeros wins and/or Harrisburg losses hands Akron the Eatern League Southern Division wild card - which they can claim as early as Wednesday. The Bowie Baysox in the Southern Division and Trenton Thunder in the Northern Division have already wrapped up the regular-season divison crowns.

By sstorm Published: August 22, 2008

Aeros third baseman Wes Hodges added another award to his outstanding season Thursday when he learned he was named as the team's lone representative to the Eastern League Post Season All-Star Game.

Hodges, the Tribe's second-round pick in the 2006 draft out of Georgia Tech, celebrated Thursday by hitting his team-leading 14th home run to give him a team-best 87 RBI to spark the Aeros to a 4-2 win over host Connecticut.

Head hits multiple homers, Aeros score many runs & roster moves

By sstorm Published: August 20, 2008

Stephen Head woke up the Aeros offense that has been asleep since the All-Star Break, using three homers to power the Aeros to a 9-6 win over host Connecticut Wednesday night.

Head, who entered the night's action with 10 home runs on the season, hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and solo shots in the fifth and seventh innings to become just the fifth Akron player to hit three in a game in franchise history.

By sstorm Published: August 16, 2008

In his second rehab appearance with the Aeros, Indians second baseman Josh Barfield went 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts in three innings.

"The hand feel good," said Barfield, who is next scheduled to join Triple-A Buffalo Monday as the Aeros wrap up this home stand Sunday before embarking on a six-game road trip. "Now it's just a matter of getting the timing back and getting comfortable on the field.''

Martinez enjoys pain-free rehab stint; Aeros just painful to watch

By sstorm Published: August 15, 2008

As one astute press box observer said late Friday night after the Aeros were shut out 6-0 by visiting New Britain - even Victor Martinez could not save the Aeros.

Not that you expect a guy who hasn't hit live pitching in two months to show the way, but with as much as the Aeros offense has struggled since the All-Star break, anything was welcome Friday as the Indians All-Star catcher joined the team to begin his weekend rehab stint after right elbow surgery.

Barfield happy to get back on field at Canal Park; Martinez next

By sstorm Published: August 14, 2008

It wasn't Progressive Field, but it didn't matter to Josh Barfield.

Limited to three innings in his first rehab outing since undergoing ligament surgery on his left middle finger June 17, Barfield was excited to just be playing again - even it was with the Tribe's Double-A club at Canal Park Thursday.

Sipp settled in, Toregas snaps skid

By sstorm Published: August 12, 2008

It took Tony Sipp two rough outings before he settled in to his old form, but it appears the left-hander has found his groove.

Sure, Sipp is 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA since joining the Aeros July 17 while making his way back from Tommy John surgery. But he has allowed just one run over his last nine innings spanning his last seven appearances.

A touching moment for Lofgren

By sstorm Published: August 2, 2008

The event I'm about to write about had nothing to do with baseball and came before Saturday's game even started. But I loved it.

If Aeros fans wanted a glimpse into the kind of person Aeros pitcher Chuck Lofgren is, you should have seen the smile on his face as he led his mother Pam Lofgren out onto the mound before the game.
