Multiple outlets—ESPN's Buster Olney was the first—have reported that the Indians have signed relief pitcher John Axford. The Associated Press also confirmed this morning that there is a deal in place, pending a physical.
It's likely that Axford will close for the Indians.
Axford pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals last season and had an ERA of 4.02. He struck out 65 batters in 65.0 innings pitched.
He saved 35 games in 2012 for the Brewers but lost his closer's role to Jim Henderson and was then traded. Once Axford joined the Cardinals, he had just a 1.74 ERA to end the season.
