Westbrook victim of rainout

By Sheldon Published: March 7, 2010

GOODYEAR, Ariz.: The rain streaming up from Mexico today looked like it would last until about four in the afternoon.

Apparently, Indians officials thought so too and cancelled the exhibition game against the Rangers. When a spring training game is scratched, there is always someone among the media who yells out, ""When is the day-night doubleheader?''

The answer, of course, is never. Spring training games are not made up.

In case there are any fans in Phoenix who bought tickets to today's game and are reading this, they can exchange them for another spring training home game or ask for a refund. In either case, the ticket holder must come to the box office at Goodyear Ballpark.

If any player was disappointed by the shortened work day, it was Jake Westbrook, who was scheduled to pitch the first two innings.

""I was looking forward to getting out there,'' Westbrook said.

""This was a bad in the sense that we didn't get Jake out there,'' manager Manny Acta said.

Westbrook will throw his two innings on Monday against the Diamondbacks. The only difference between pitching today or Monday? He will have to ride the bus for two hours to get his work in.

""Hey, that's part of spring training, too,'' Westbrook said.

In most respects, it was not a lost day for the Tribe. Pitchers scheduled to throw on the side did so indoors, and the hitters took their cuts in the batting cages.
