What might be at stake for Perez

By Sheldon Ocker Published: June 5, 2013

NEW YORK: Not to get too far ahead of the story, but if Chris Perez is found to have knowingly received narcotics through the mail, he could be subject to federal penalties as well as state and local charges.

In addition, most likely he would run afoul of Major League Baseball's drug abuse policy, which sepcifies a 15-30 day suspenstion a $10,000 fine for a first offense. He also could be sent for treatment.

Manager Terry Francona  learned of Perez’s dilemma from the team’s traveling secretary Mike Seghi, when the manager was in his hotel room after Tuesday night’s game.

“”Normally at night after games, my phone beeps to get updates like pitcher vs. batter breakdowns,’’ Francona said. “”So I was getting the normal beeping and didn’t answer it right away. When I did, it ended my sleep for the night.’’
