Wheeler designated for assignment; who will take his place?

By Sheldon Ocker Published: May 13, 2012
BOSTON: In Dan Wheeler’s past four appearances, he gave up nine runs and 10 hits in five innings, including six runs in one inning today against the Red Sox.
After the game, the Tribe designated him for assignment. It’s not clear if they would ask him to go to Columbus if he clears waivers or if he would agree to go to Triple-A.
One mitigating circumstance for Wheeler is that he has not been used regularly, though it is difficult to defend his 8.76 earned-run average in 12 appearances (122/3 innings).
Who will fill Wheeler’s roster spot?
There are several relievers at Columbus who are pitching relatively well.
Jeremy Accardo has a 2.76 ERA in 13 appearances (16 1/3 innings) with seven walks and 16 strikeouts.
Chris Ray has a 2.20 ERA in 15 appearances (16 1/3 innings) with seven walks and 13 strikeouts.
Hector Ambriz has a 3.26 ERA in 12 appearances (19 1/3 innings) with 13 walks and 20 strikeouts.
Frank Herrmann has a 4.11 ERA in 12 appearances (15 1/3 innings) with four walks and 17 strikeouts.
