CLEVELAND: Following the first simulated game for Alex White today, manager Manny Acta revealed that the rookie phenom will spend the rest of the season as a reliever when he comes off the disabled list.
""We’re going to have him pitch out of the bullpen the rest of the year,’’ Acta said. “”If he starts, he has to go (to rehab) and throw 20, 30 then 40, then 50 and 60 pitches until he gets to around 80. Who knows where we’ll be after that long a time.’’
White is on the DL with a finger injury. He threw bullpen sessions three times last week and threw his first simulated game Monday, throwing 25 pitches to live hitters.
“”I felt really good and threw all my pitches,’’ White said.
Will White throw another simulated game or go on a rehab assignment?
“”As soon as he says how good he feels, and depending on his command, we’ll decide if he needs another sim game or is ready to be sent out,’’ Acta said.
If White had his way, he would go to the minors.
“”I wasn’t to go out somewhere,’’ he said. “”I don’t think I’d benefit from another simulated game. I need to face more hitters.’’
Acta indicated that White’s long term future remains as a starter.
“”That’s our plan,’’ the manager said. “”But we‘ll reassess everything after the season and go from there.’’`
