A total of 20 Youngstown State University faculty members today endorsed the proposed charter amendment to ban fracking and injection wells within the Youngstown city limits.
City voters will vote for the third time on the charter amendment on May 8.
Here is their statement:
“Based on scientific evidence from other regions in the U.S. and overseas, shale gas development in northeastern Ohio will come with major environmental and health risks. As members of the community we endorse the Charter Amendment being considered in the May 6th election to ban fracking and injection wells within the City of Youngstown. We recommend a YES vote because fracking for shale gas has been scientifically linked with birth defects in Colorado, high levels of air and water pollution in several states, as well as earthquakes right here in the Mahoning Valley and elsewhere. This ban does not have to be permanent but should remain in effect at least until companies can control the air pollution (especially the harmful volatile organic compounds), safely treat radioactivity in the waste, and are required to clean their used fracking water before safely returning it to the natural source from which it came.”
