Two Belmont County landowners have filed suit against two natural gas companies after they signed a lease in 2008 for $100 per acre.
Named defendants in the suit were New York-based Hess Corp., Marquette Exploration and Mason Dixon. The suit was filed in Belmont County Common Pleas Court.
The plaintiffs are Kevin and Rebecca Bench.
The Benches contend that about 300 landowners like themselves are getting a raw deal because signing leases in the area now exceed $5,200 an acre.
They signed leases with Mason Dixon in December 2008. The leases have been acquired by Hess.
In the suit, the plaintiffs contend that Mason Dixon was not licensed to do business in Ohio and that Hess should pay landowners more.
The companies dispute those claims.
