The U.S. Bureau of Land Management said today it will use industry standrads for cementing natural gas wells.
Cementing is the "most critical part of the drilling operations," Robert Abbey, director of the bureau said in testimony before a House committee.
The federal agency is drafting rules for natural gas production by hydraulic fracturing or fracking.
It could release a draft version of the rules on public lands for public comment in early April.
The rules will adopt American Petroleum Institute standards for cementing and will requyire that drillers prove the actual job as consistent with enguineers' drawings provide before the work began.
