Chesapeake Energy Corp. has acquired 28,000 acres of leases in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties from Everflow Eastern.
The price is about $35 million, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Youngstown Vindicator reports.
The deal affects about 14,500 landowners.
Everflow Eastern has been drilling in the shallower Clinton sandstone but the leases give Chesapeake the right to drill in the deeper Utica shale.
Most of the leases were transferred on June 26.
Both companies declined comment on the deal and its impacts, the newspaper said.
