Chesapeake has 230 of 267 wells in three Ohio counties

How big a player is Chesapeake Energy Corp. in Ohio's Utica shale?

The Oklahoma-based energy company has been aggressively drilling in eastern Ohio and has 1.3 million acres under lease.

It has 230 of the 267 wells permitted, drilled, in process or producing in Carroll, Harrison and Columbiana counties, according to the Salem News.

CEO Aubrey McClendon called those three counties Chesapeake's "core of the core in a conference call with investors earlier this month.

Of the 155 wells in Carroll County, 147 belong to Chesapeake. That's 95 percent.

Of the 58 wells in Columbiana, 57 belong to Chesapeake. That's 98 percent.

Of the 54 wells in Harrison, 26 belong to Chesapeake. that's 48 percent.

Those totals are through Nov. 10, based on Ohio Department of Natural Resources data.
