Cuadrilla Resources is seeking a permit to hydraulically fracture or frack an exploration well it has drilled in Lancashire in northwest England.
The company said it hopes to test the well next year.
It plans to ask for approval to drill and fracture six additional wells in the region, the New York Times reports.
The company tried to fracture a well in 2011 and that set off small tremors that resulted in an 18-month moratorium on fracking that was just recently lifted.
The company has also delayed drilling in West Sussex south of London, after the companyw as told it needed additional permits.
