A major battle is brewing over hydraulically fracturing or fracking on 18,000 acres on California's Central Coast.
It would be the first large-scale operation to frack to reach oil in California.
It would span three counties between the Central Coast and the San Joaquin Valley: Monterey, San Benito ande Fresno counties.
The federal governent that owns oil rights expects to lease the tract in December.
