Great Ohio River Relay to begin Sept. 14 in Pittsburgh

The Great Ohio River Relay will begin at noon on Sept. 14 in Pittsburgh.

The baton wil be carried through six states to Cairo, Ill., to bring attention to the threats to the Ohio River including fracking and transporting drilling wastes via barge.

The trip will cover 981 miles through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia and Kentucky..

The event is being sponsored by the Wheeling Water Warriors.

It is being co-spnsored by 13 other eco-groups along the route.

There will be a rally at 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at Warwood, W. Va., where GreenHunter Water wants to build a wastewater recycoling facility outside of Wheeling.

The baton, 24 inches long, was made of water maple by Wheeling artist Orion Stephen.
