EnergyWire took a look at how many wells state inspectors are responsible for, and found that the answer is elusive in some states.
Oklahoma has 62 inspectors for 180,000 active wells.
North Dakota has 20 inspectors and 7,188 producing wells. It has funding for three new staffers when the number of wells reaches 9,300.
Texas has 245,893 producing wells and 153 gas and oil inspectors.
