A press release on today's ant-drilling protest in Canton where Utica Summit 2014 will be held:
“Travelin’ John” Appearance to Highlight Need for Action to Protect Stark and Summit Counties from Oil and Gas Waste Dumping
Canton, Ohio – On October 23, supporters of the statewide oil and gas waste injection well ban introduced in Ohio’s House and Senate will protest the Utica Summit to highlight the need for local action to protect Stark and Summit Counties from the dangers posed by underground injection of toxic, radioactive drilling waste. Stark County Concerned Citizens, the Stark-Summit Coalition, Frack Free Ohio and Food & Water Watch will call on Stark and Summit County Commissioners to pass a resolution in support of state legislation that would prohibit underground injection of toxic, radioactive oil and gas waste.
The groups contend that the underground disposal of the waste poses unacceptable risks for the community, including the potential for drinking water and farmland contamination and earthquakes triggered by the injections. The groups also seek amendments to Ohio statute allowing radioactive waste to be dumped into solid waste landfills statewide as passed in this year’s budget bill.
