Kasich's tax proposal would cost Ohio drillers $874 million

By Bob Downing Published: March 12, 2014

Ohio Gov. John Kasich's plans to collect an estimated $874 million from Ohio's largest oil and gas producers over the next three years has industry officials angry.

On Tuesday, the governor released a 1,600-page overall tax reform package  that would lower individual income taxes by raising taxes on tobacco sales and business - including a brand new tax on oil and gas.

Kasich wants to impose a 2.75 percent tax on every dollar that horizontal well producers receive for the oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids they extract from the shale.

The powerful Ohio Oil and Gas Association rejected Kasich's plan as unreasonable and unfair minutes after its release.
