Ohio Gov. John Kasich has signed an executive order that makes Lake Erie off-limits to drilling.
He signed the order today as part a day-long fishing trip on Lake Erie and Fish Ohio activities in Port Clinton.
At present, there is a federal ban on drilling under Lake Erie from the Americans ide.
But Kasich's move provides added protection for the alke, should the federal ban ever be lifted.
Kasich had supported such a ban during the 2010 gubernatorial campaign.
Efforts to adopt such a ban in 2011 failed.
There is drilling under Lake Erie from the Canadian side of the lake.
In 2003, then-Gov. Bob Taft signed a similar order but it expired with his administartion four years later.
Former Gov. Ted Strickland had proposed a drilling ban but the ban was never adopted.
