A Kentucky-based company has plans to build five hotels in the heart of Ohio’s Utica shale, according to the Cincinnati Business Courier.
Covington-based Corporex Companies’ plans include two hotels in Stark County, one in Carroll County and one in Belmont County. The site of the fifth hotel has not been determined.
Ground has been broken off south of Canton off Interstate 77 at Faircrest Avenue in Canton Township for a $13 million, 99-room Fairfield Inn.
Work is also under way in Carrollton on a $13.3 million, 100-room Candlewood Suites.
Both hotels are scheduled to begin operations in late 2014, the Cincinnati Business Courier said.
Both will be managed by Commonwealth Hotels, an affiliate of Corporex.
The magazine listed the third and fourth planned hotels in Canton and in St. Clairsville.
The business publication said that Corporex Capital LLC was working to raise a $23 million equity fund.
Hotels are especially attractive to out-of-state drilling workers in eastern Ohio where rental housing is in short supply.
