Marathon Petroleum Corp.’s 114,000- barrel-a-day Detroit refinery is expected to reach full rates Monday, Dec. 23, after completing the restart of a diesel hydrotreater, according to a person familiar with operations.

The unit, used to remove sulfur from diesel, was started Dec. 20 after shutting the previous day when a gasket blew out on a check valve, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the information isn’t public. Repairs are completed and the unit is expected to ramp up to 100 percent of capacity by the end of the day, the person said.

Brandon Daniels, a communications manager at Marathon, said in an e-mail today that the company doesn’t comment on refining operations and has no information to provide.

The refinery, which completed a project in 2012 that boosted its heavy oil capacity by 80,000 barrels, processes a wide range of crude grades from light-sweet to heavy-sour, according to the company’s website.

It produces gasoline, diesel, propane, propylene, slurry and fuel-grade coke and distributes products by pipeline, truck, rail and barge, the website shows.
