N.J. legislator pushes fracking ban extension

A Republican who represents New Jersey's Monmouth County shore communities is sponsoring legislation to extend a ban on gas drilling.

The ban on fracking would continue until the environmental consequences for the drilling are determined.

Assemblyman Declan O'Scanlon's bill would extend the ban on gas drilling or exploration by a technique known as fracking until federal regulators conclude an environmental impact study and the state Environmental Protection Department determines the moratorium can safely end.

Gov. Chris Christie signed a one-year fracking ban that is set to expire next month. The ban would end before the federal Environmental Protection Agency releases results of its study.

In New Jersey, environmentalists sought a permanent ban on fracking and on treating fracking wastewater from other states.

The measures are largely symbolic since New Jersey is not sitting on vast natural gas reserves.
