There's little new to report on what's happening in Ohio's Mahoning County in the wake of earthquakes linked to hydraulic fracturing or fracking.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has not yet received a seismic monitoring plan from the Texas-based Hilcorp Energy Corp., so the wells remain in an idle state in Poland Township, said state spokesman Mark Bruce this week.
Last March, Houston-based Hilcorp Energy suspended drilling horizontal wells in the Utica shale in Mahoning County's Poland Township.
The area was hit by up to four small quakes on March 10-11. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources said no injection wells were nearby and ordered Hilcorp to stop drilling its horizontal wells.
Records show the company has 11 permits in Poland Township with most of the drilling taking place on the giant Carbon Limestone Landfill.
Seven wells have been drilled, two are producing and four are permitted.
In April, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources concluded those quakes in Mahoning County were likely caused by hydraulic fracturing or fracking.
The state ordered an indefinite moratorium on fracking natural gas wells within three miles of the epicenter of earthquakes in Poland Township southeast of Youngstown. There were five quakes of 2.0 or greater..
The report marks the first probable connection between earthquakes and hydraulic fracturing or fracking in Ohio.
It is reportedly the first likely connection between earthquakes and that process in the Appalachian Basin that includes Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
