The Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management has approved 405 Utica shale permits in Ohio.
That is an increase of 23 since the last state filing.
To date, 171 of those wells have been drilled in eastern Ohio.
That's grown by 27 wells from 144 wells since the last state filing two weeks ago.
The listing was released Wednesday.
The permits have been issued since late 2009.
Carroll County is No. 1 with permits: 140. That is nearly 35 percent of the state total.
Other county permit totals: Columbiana, 55; Harrison, 49; Jefferson, 31;Guernsey, 24; Monroe, 18; Mahoning, 14; Stark, 13; Portage, 13; Noble, 13;and Belmont, 10.
Locally, Medina and Wayne counties each have one permit.
Ohio has also approved 16 permits in the Marcellus shale, of which six wells have been drilled.
Chesapeake Energy Corp,the Oklahoma-based firm is the No. 1 driller in Ohio.
