The Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management has approved 17 new Utica shale drilling permits.
That covers through Jan. 12.
That brings the total of permits for eastern Ohio to 498.
A total of 208 of those wells have been drilled, and 48 are in production,
There are 24 rigs operating in Ohio.
The new permits are for Belmont County, 2; Carroll, 3; Columbiana, 1; Guernsey, 3; Harrison, 3; Jefferson, 1; and Noble, 4.
Carroll County remains the No. 1 drilling county in Ohio with 179 permits.
Chesapeake Energy Corp,the Oklahoma-based firm is the No. 1 driller in Ohio.
