Opponents of fracking in national forest to release report

By Bob Downing Published: October 8, 2013

From the Associated Press:

Opponents of opening the George Washington National Forest to so-called fracking are releasing a report to support their anti-drilling cause.

The report to be released today in northern Virginia argues that fracking is a destructive drilling practice that has no place in the largest U.S. forest on the East Coast.

The U.S. Forest Service is expected to release its updated management plan for the GW forest this fall. Some environmental groups fear the plan will allow natural gas drilling using hydraulic fracturing, which uses high-pressure waters and chemicals to extract natural gas from shale.

The report is from Environment Virginia, the Potomac Riverkeeper and the American Hiking Society.

The George Washington National Forest’s 1.1 million acres are primarily in Virginia but they also include parts of West Virginia.
