Rice Energy, LLC, based in Cannonsburg, Pa., intends to launch an initial public offering (IPO) valuing it around $2.5 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.
Rice Energy is known to have already filed a confidential registration statement with U.S. regulators, three of the people said.
It has hired Barclays PLC to lead the IPO and is targeting an early 2014 IPO, two of the people said.
The privately held company was founded in 2005 by president Daniel Rice.
Chesapeake Energy Corp,the Oklahoma-based firm is the No. 1 driller in Ohio.
