Rice Energy seeking investors for Utica shale in Ohio

By Bob Downing Published: February 19, 2013

From Dow Jones:

Rice Energy, an energy company backed by Natural Gas Partners, is looking for new investors as it seeks to expand its presence in the Utica shale.

One of those people said Rice Energy could raise as much as $400 million to develop its holdings in the Utica shale in Ohio.

Rice Energy has already raised $100 million from Natural Gas Partners at the end of 2011. Rice declined to comment.

Beginning in 2007, Rice started leasing real estate in Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale formation. Since that time, the Canonsburg, Pa., company has created a leasehold position that could yield 200 to 250 wells in the Marcellus.

Now, according to some private equity investors familiar with the company's plans, Rice has amassed significant holdings in the Ohio section of the Utica Shale formation.
