Oklahoma-based Chesapeake Energy Corp. on Thursday confirmed that the company and its chairman and CEO, Aubrey McClendon, are under investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The company was notified on Wednsday by the SEC's Fort Worth regional office in Texas of an informal inquiry.
The federal agency requested that the company and McClendon retain certain documents.
The company and McClendon pledged to coperate with the SEC inquiry.
In related news, a U.S. senator is asking the U.S. Justice Department to investigate Chesapeake and McClendon.
The request was announced by Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat.
