Stark State College trustees have approved plans for a new $1.3 million shale drilling training lab to train oil and natural gas workers.
The indoor-outdoor facility, at the corner of Third Street and Cherry Avenue SE in downtown Canton, is expected to be ready by the fall 2014, said college president Para M. Jones.
"This lab will provide students with hands-on learning experiences, much like those they would experience in the field or on oil rigs," Jones said.
The parcel was purchased last June for $179,900 and is within one block from the planned Stark State Downtown Canton Satellite Center and Energy Institute that is scheduled to open in January 2015 at 400 Third St. SE.
The college will build a 7,000-square-foot facility for the ShaleNET training now offered at the college in Jackson Township.
