Gas and oil development could blossom in eastern Ohio, but Ohio legislators need to be careful as they pursue stricter regulations, said Terry Fleming, executive director of the Ohio Petroleum Council.
In a two-page cautionary statement released on Thursday, Fleming said, "It is critical that we continue to work together to boost Ohio's economy and enhance our nation's energy security and do so in a safe, thoughtful and agile regulatory environment and that state officials base rule-making and enforcement actions on sound scientific principles."
Ohio has many rules already in place and additional restrictions could hurt the industry and dampen the drilling boom in Ohio, he warned.
His statement came after Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine called for tougher rules on drilling.
