The Washington Post reports that Virginia's Rockingham County has, in effect, rejected the first drilling request into the Marcellus shale.
Carrizzo Oil and Gas wanted to drill in the Blue Ridge Mountains near the West Virginia-Virginia border. It would have been the first well in Virginia to tap into the Marcellus shale.
But the county failed to act on the company's request for a needed special land-use permit. The county's five supervisors, concerned about the drilling, never acted on the permit request. The company shelved the project after two years of work.
Maryland has also halted Marcellus gas exploration in that stat until a study of impacts can be completed.
