Weirton is imposing a 6 percent tax on natural gas drilling companies to protect its infrastructure and residents from potential damage.
City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to approve the new business and occupation tax.
According to The Associated Press, the lone opponent, councilman David Dalyrmple, said the tax is anti-business.
Mayor George Kondik has said the tax will provide funding to repair any damage that heavy drilling trucks might cause to streets.
The revenue also will help the city deal with fire and safety issues, and training related to the natural gas industry.
Chesapeake Energy Corp,the Oklahoma-based firm is the No. 1 driller in Ohio.
