West Virginia park gets top Marcellus leasing deal

By Bob Downing Published: February 10, 2013

From the Marcellus Drilling News and the Weirton Daily Times:

In a story about a natural gas pipeline that will be run under a county-owned trail in Brooke County, WV, MDN spotted a brief mention about the signing bonus and royalty rate received by Brooke Hills Park in 2011 for drilling on 100 acres of park land.

It is perhaps the highest per acre signing bonus we’ve seen for land in the Marcellus:

The Brooke Hills Park board has received $750,000 for signing a lease with Appalachia Midstream Services allowing Chesapeake Energy to drill on nearly 100 acres at the rear of the park near Pearce Run Road. Crews finished hydraulic fracturing at the site last summer, says the Weirton newspaper.

The park will receive 18 percent of royalties on about 90 acres, with other royalties going to descendants of the W.C. Gist family, who retained mineral rights to a portion of the land they donated to the county for the park.*

Calculate it out—that’s $7,500 per acre for the signing bonus. And an 18% royalty on top of it! A very nice deal indeed.
