Akron City Council President Marco Sommerville, Akron Finance Director Diane Miller-Dawson and Akron Service Director Rick Merolla (all members of the Joint Board of Review that oversees the school construction project) came to the school board's special meeting Monday to talk about Issue 17.
Issue 17 -- the proposed charter amendment that would divert a third of the city's dedicated income tax for school construction to safety forces for three years -- was the sole item on the agenda (other than the executive session to ratify the teachers' contract).
However, board president the Rev. Curtis T. Walker Sr. said they decided to scrap the discussion because they need more time to get more information. He said the board likely will discuss whether to endorse Issue 17 at the next regular board meeting on Oct. 11. Nobody seems to have given the city officials a heads up that the agenda had changed until they were standing outside the board room.
The board's vice president, speaking only for himself, already has taken a public position on Issue 17. He's against it.
