Someone from the Pew Center on the States read my story today on arts funding for preschoolers and suggested I take a look at Pew's new 50-state survey on preschool funding. Ohio's investment in early education has been up and down and it appears to be in need of an infusion. But the state is about to tackle an $8 billion deficit, so it's not the best time to be scrounging for new money.
Leaders in the state are working to streamline the governance and funding mechanisms for early childhood programs, but these reforms will have little immediate impact if pre-k resources remain limited and policies continue to shift. Ohio's policy makers must strengthen their early learning commitments to remain competitive with other states.
