Ohio State president ready to fight for higher education in state budget

COLUMBUS: Ohio State University President Gordon Gee is making the case for higher education ahead of what's likely to be a tough state budget fight this year.

Gee tells the Columbus Dispatch in an interview published Monday that Ohio State and other universities are economic engines that will drive the state forward.

Ohio lawmakers will need find ways to fill a hole of at least $8 billion in the next two-year budget.

Gee expresses confidence in Ohio Gov.-elect John Kasich and his ability to handle the state's finances. The Ohio State chief describes the Republican as ''smart'' and a man who believes in making tough decisions and making good investment strategies.

Gee tells the newspaper he expects Kasich will be an excellent governor.
